Caverna de las Brujas
Walk along its dark and humid paths, lighting these ancient...

It is located at 77 km from the city of Malargüe on Moncol´s hillside at 1830 msl. Its 5,000 m journey offers stalactites and stalagmites of a great variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Stalactites are needle-shaped water formations hanging from the roofs of cavities. Stalagmites are similar to them but they are formed from the floor. There are also columns, which are the joint between stalagmites and stalactites and veils that are curtain like formations
Walking along its dark and humid paths, lighting these ancient formations is like going back in time. We walk along the inside of the galleries and we stop in wide spaces such as “La Virgen” room and / or “Los Encuentros” room where thousand year work shows particular shapes.
The cave’s name probable comes from ancient villagers’ superstitions (Witches’ cave.) There are several stories about it. One of them says that a mother holding her child in her arms approached to the cavity and then they disappeared. Inside the cave moans and groans were heard. Another version tells that at sunset and at night, a light could be seen at its entrance showing witches’ shadows whose singing in a ritual was heard.
