Castillos de Pincheira

Rock formation cut by erosion.
This natural monument is located 27 km from the city of Malargüe. It is a castle-like formation cut by wind and water erosion. There is a camp site with an elderly grove, and all services are provided, there is also a swimming pool to enjoy in summer (optional.) We walk along a hanging bridge to cross Rio Malargüe and reach the formations.
This place was named after the leader and bandit José Antonio Pincheira who used it as shelter. Around the place pottery, arrow tips, chaquiras (necklace beads,) and other aborigine culture remains are found.
Traditional meals are served in the place’s canteen.
War between royalists and republicans had decimated Chile which provoked pillage acts in the south of Chile, in Neuquen and south of Mendoza. Due to poverty in some trans-Andean provinces, royalist guerrillas and bandits organized great thefts and sackings in Argentine fields to give people what they took and get followers of Chilean royalists. José Antonio Pincheira had become the aborigines and Chilean compatriots’ leader and he harassed Malargüe with vandalism acts. He took advantage of the unhappiness and fear that aborigines felt towards white people to cause hatred.
When he found out the Chilean Army was following him, he settled in different places to confuse them. This situation put Mendoza to danger of aborigines’ attacks. In 1879, the authorities had to sign a Peace treaty with Pincheira in San Juan. Pincheira was offered clothe, food, military equipment and the rank of Southern Board General Commanding Officer if he abandoned he province, submit to the governor’s orders and keep him informed of his location. One year later, national politics’ acts (Unitarians and federals fights period) caused the treaty’s break up.
